GUSTATORY Good & Proper Tea

Good & Proper Tea Makers

Good & Proper want to show you how good tea can be, when it’s done right. For them, that means sourcing the best possible, whole leaf teas from around the world, custom brewing each of them to bring out the best possible flavour in every cup, and helping you do the same to ensure every cup of tea tastes just as it should. They call this way of doing things, Good & Proper.

The story of Good & Proper began when founder, Emilie - growing bored of sub-par brews - decided it was time to bring better cups of tea to London. With plans to convert a 1974 Citroën-H van into a mobile tea bar, she took the idea to crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, where 372 backers made that dream come true. Each of their names are still displayed proudly on the back window of that van, which the backers also affectionately christened ‘Watson’. The first cup of tea was brewed in Shoreditch on the 3rd December 2012. Many years later and thanks to the support of our many wonderful customers, friends, partners and suppliers, Good & Proper has grown to a flagship Tea Bar, an online store, a growing network of cafe and restaurant partners – and of course the van too lives on.

As Emilie describes, 'An imported culture of skinny lattes and frappucinos-to-go has meant coffee has dominated our high streets for over a decade. And yet, though tea has remained the nation’s favourite hot drink, the quality on offer when we are out and about is more often than not distinctly average. That’s what I wanted to change, by offering fellow tea-drinkers the same quality experience that my coffee-junkie friends currently enjoy. A Good & Proper cup of tea….finally.'

The coffee industry is in crisis. Informed purchases are needed

Issue: Coffee prices are in crisis, which threatens the very existence of many coffee producers, and so, the future of coffee globally. For more: GUSTATORY on Sky News Radio (Interview)
Our Answer: Informed purchasing of coffee from the independent coffee roasters available through GUSTATORY's coffee subscriptions are encouraged. Through direct-to-source relationships, roasters are able to protect their supply chains from the effects of price volatility as they form special relationships with producers. These relationships also protect producers as roasters often commit to fixed term and fixed price contracts, which give producers certainty. This certainty is what producers need in order to not only survive but thrive, committing to sustainable practices and addressing other global problems that are threatening the industry such as climate change.

Make their commitment your commitment. Support independent coffee roasters and you’ll be making a difference before you even have your first cup of coffee.
