Kenya AB Muchagara Coffee

The established nature of coffee production in Kenya empowers producers, especially smallholder farmers, as they have multiple options in terms of processing. Being able to choose the best quality processing for their crop, means they can look to receive a better price for their coffee and in turn feed back into the socio-economic health of their farm or cooperative.

Kenya largely produces washed coffee, and is considered by many as the world’s highest quality producer, with smallholders representing about 55% of production across the country. They will often have as few as 100 coffee trees, and many are organised into larger cooperatives.

Many smallholders and co-ops will have several wet mills to choose from when it comes to deciding where to process their crop, and the competitive nature of this has a really positive impact. The better factories attract more farmers by producing coffees that earn the highest prices, which they return to the farmers in the form of a second payment. This means that there is invested interest in quality from all sides, raising the position of everyone in production.
