Rwamatamu Coffee Washing Station is owned and operated by Gaston Rutaganda. He built the station and started his coffee plantation in 2010. He processes cherries from his 15-hectare farm, along with cherries that he purchases from nearly 2000 neighbouring farms.

Rwamatamu Station sits off the shores of Lake Kivu, near the East African Rift Valley. During the day, the station experiences strong winds coming off of Lake Kivu, whilst at night this changes and the wind comes from the Nyungwe Forest.

Before processing the cherries, Gaston floats the cherries to remove any floaters. The sinking cherries are then passed through a disc pulper before entering the fermentation tank. After 12 hours, the parchment is stomped and rinsed with water before going to the grading channel. Parchment is sorted in the pre-drying area for one day before being placed in the sun. Due to the thickness and presence of strong winds, the coffee dries within 10-13 days.

Rwamatamu Coffee Washing Station was awarded 10th place in the 2015 Rwanda Cup of Excellence.
