Timor-Leste Rotutu Coffee
This is our second summer in a row sourcing coffee from Timor-Leste - a relative newcomer to the speciality coffee scene and indeed the world map after gaining independence from Indonesia in 2002. It still shares a large land border with this famous coffee producing country. The island of Timor is divided between the two nations.
Coffee production in the country is mainly located in the western-central highlands and the dry, tropical climate is ideal for growing coffee. Like last year's popular Lacau Village, the Rotutu cooperative is located in mountainous Letefoho area.
The head of Rotutu is Francisco de Deus and he is a third generation farmer. Since 2018, he has been working with our partners in the country, Karst Organics, to develop the infrastructure for speciality coffee export. The smallholders in this cooperative are subsistence farmers and Francisco has been working towards creating a more stable economic model for his farmers based on the improvement of coffee quality and consistency. Karst Organics recently funded the building of a centralised processing and storage facility to contribute to this goal. Very exciting stuff!
