Ethiopia Boji Coffee

After a challenging few months trying to get coffee out of the country, it's a joy and a relief to finally introduce the first of our Ethiopian naturals for this year! This is also our first Yirgacheffe coffee in a long while on our offering.

The Boji washing station in the Kochere woreda is actually located in the Gedeo zone, the correct geographical name for the area. However, this zone has been known as Yirgacheffe for so long and has developed such a formidable reputation under this name, it would be almost misleading to try and correct the course at this stage.

There are 500 smallholder contributors to the Boji washing station with many of these farmers living in and around the nearby Kochere village. Producers in this area traditionally sell to a washing station within walking distance of the farm. In addition to the wild local landraces* we would expect from this origin, there are JARC varieties, developed in the Jimma Agricultural Research Centre, which have been developed to be resistant to pests and boast higher yields.

This coffee is naturally processed at the station in the traditional Ethiopian way. After floating to check for ripeness, the cherries are washed in clean water and moved straight to the drying fields. Here they are dried for 2 or 3 weeks, first in a single-cherry layer with regular turning and then in a thicker layer to slow the drying process. We are really loving this one, we hope you love it too!

Landraces* - A "land-race" is a local variety which has developed naturally as a consequence of natural and cultural influences. It contrasts with a cultivar which is specifically bred in a more purposeful way to capture certain attributes.

  • Strawberry Cheesecake, Camomille, Stewed Plum
  • Altitude - 2100-2300 masl
  • Process - Natural
  • Variety - Local Landraces & JARC varieties
