Cherry / Dates / Caramel.
At this time of year Prototype Blend utilises two vibrant fresh crops, both from Rwanda but each with very different flavour profiles. The washed Kabuye is made up of a selection of high-altitude farms between 1,800 and 2,100 meters above sea level. This Bourbon 139 variety grows on south facing slopes in ideal conditions before being quickly transported to the newly built Kinini washing station in the Rulindo district in Central Rwanda which we visited last year.
The natural Gitwe is another fairly new washing station in the Nyamesheke region on the eastern shore of Lake Kivu. This washing station processes coffee from about 800 small farms located at similar altitudes to those in Kabuye. This is only the second year that they have been producing natural coffees and they are tasting amazing! The Kabuye provides Prototype with rich notes of fudge and raisins while the Gitwe brings bright notes of pear and cherry with bags of sweetness!
