GUSTATORY Rio Nuevo

Rio Nuevo Chocolate Makers

Founded by husband and wife, Rio Nuevo is headed by Andres from Ecuador and Sara from Colombia. Now living in Cornwall, via their direct connections to the cocoa farmers in Ecuador, Rio Nuevo create delicious chocolate using only ethically sourced single estate Arriba Nacional cocoa beans. They are not just chocolate - it’s chocolate with a purpose.

Ecuador is the leading producer of fine flavour cacao in the world, Arriba Nacional. Only 6-8% of cacao produced in the world is fine flavour cacao, of which 54% is produced in Ecuador. Working with these communities back at home, both founders know first hand the difficulties small scale farmers face and they always felt we had a responsibility and a role to play in creating change. Always wanting to make chocolate bars that have a positive impact on the land and its farmers, as well as raising awareness of the lack and limitations of fair trade practices in the cacao industry, Rio Nuevo was then born and continues to flourish.

The coffee industry is in crisis. Informed purchases are needed

Issue: Coffee prices are in crisis, which threatens the very existence of many coffee producers, and so, the future of coffee globally. For more: GUSTATORY on Sky News Radio (Interview)Our Answer: Informed purchasing decisions are advised, from the independent coffee roasters featured here on the GUSTATORY marketplace. Through direct-to-source relationships, roasters are able to protect their supply chains from the effects of price volatility as they form special relationships with producers. These relationships also protect producers as roasters often commit to fixed term and fixed price contracts, which give producers certainty. This certainty is what producers need in order to not only survive but thrive, committing to sustainable practices and addressing other global problems that are threatening the industry such as climate change.

Make their commitment your commitment. Support independent coffee roasters and you’ll be making a difference before you even have your first cup of coffee.
