Q/ Tell us a bit about your coffee roasters...

We are a Scottish coffee roastery and cafe based in Kinross. Last month we had a massive achievement of opening our second cafe - located in Stirling city centre. Our team is made up of three directors: Neil, Chris and Jamie, and seven members of staff.

Q/ What is your back story?

Unorthodox Roasters is a coffee roasting venture, borne out of a 10 month trip to Latin America in the hunt for beans and knowledge. Two travellers succeeded in learning from the best coffee roasters on the continent and visiting almost all of the coffee growing regions. It was time to bring it all back to Scotland.

Our logo was designed on a Peruvian hostel computer in Cusco. The cockerel wakes you up in the morning - just like a cup of coffee. Fire represents our enthusiasm for what we do. The coffee bean was included as a subtle way of saying “we actually roast coffee” - although many have assumed it to be a rugby ball.

The name, Unorthodox, came from a song which was playing a few months later in another hostel in Santa Ana, El Salvador. Instantly we knew the name worked. The lyrics of the song by Wretch 32 matched our style and from that moment we really haven’t looked back...A puzzled mum found a 60kg bag of Brazilian coffee from Fazenda Londrina delivered into her hallway before her son had returned from his trip.

In 2016 Unorthodox Roasters was founded and we began roasting. In 2017 we reached roasting capacity and upgraded to a 6kg Giesen and rented a shop on the High Street of Kinross. Our current coffee offering is the best it has ever been.

Q/ What makes you independent? What would you say you're known for?

We are Unorthodox. We serve filter coffee as the new espresso. We give our coffee personality by presenting single-origin coffee with Brewdog-style names. We deliver coffee in imported Japanese mugs and tea in glass cups. Our cafe is rustic and homely. Being in our cafe is an experience and we want it to be a memorable one. Our biggest goal is to raise standards and change people's perception of what coffee should taste like. No more bitterness. No sugar needed. Milk should be optional, not necessary.

Q/ If you had to drink one single origin or blend for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Commiting to drink only one coffee for the rest of your life sounds like a coffee enthusiast's nightmare! However, if I was forced to pick, it would HAVE to be Wee Stoater - a single origin Brazillian coffee from Fazenda Aracacu, Minas Gerais. This is easily our most popular coffee of all time and it can not be matched in regards to it's ultra chocolaty flavour and bitter-free smoothness. Also, the name is just pure amazing.

Q/ Do you have a favourite roasters in the industry right now, and why?

Steampunk. Really friendly people and they have a truly awesome cafe with incredible food. They are a great inspiration!
